One of our long-time attendee, Helen Stringfellow, shared some fantastic
news with us … Helen recently had her bone density retested with fabulous
results – an increase of 4% in her spine and 3.4% overall body, which she
attributes to Pilates.
Congratulations Helen ! |
Sense of smell
Did you know that it only takes 2 seconds for an aroma to enter our nose and
travel to the part of the brain that signifies our memory and emotions. It takes
us half a second to respond to smell, opposed to a full second for us to respond
to pain.
Aromatherapy is recognised for its emotional, spiritual and physiological
therapeutical benefits. Aromatherapy uses pure essential oils in various
methods, such as oil burner, lotions, perfumes, massage and vaporisation.
Aromatherapy can be practiced at home, in the office or undertaken by a
professional.
It is advisable to conduct a little background research on Aromatherapy, as
each oil has specific therapeutic benefits and contradictions. Find the most
suitable oils for your personal therapeutic uses and ensure that all safety
precautions are undertaken. For essential oils to have therapeutic benefits, it
is vital when purchasing oils that the label contains the botanical name and
states the oil is 100%.
General home use
Burning essential oils around the home can re-create the household energy and
environment. Aside from the beautiful aroma from the oils, aromatherapy can
expel stale air, boost energy, and calm and soothe the environment, cleanse the
air and increase motivation.
- Peppermint oil is great for mental stimulation
- Citrus oils (orange, lime, and lemon) are excellent for boosting energy
levels and have a beautiful fresh clean aroma through the home
Were
you aware that simply standing with your hands on your hips has detrimental
effects automatically!
Whether you have your hands on your lower back or fingers hooked over your
hips, this single movement affects your posture and could be a reason for lower
back discomfort.
In both stances the pelvis tilts forward which leads to (in most cases)
- The lower back arches and these muscles become shorter and tighter
- The thigh muscles shorten, which draws the pelvis further forward (often
seen in men, who have ‘beer guts’ who are unable to tilt the pelvis backwards)
- Loosening and stretching the lower abs
- Scrunching the shoulders leading to tighter neck muscles
So remember to:
- Relax your shoulders
- Lengthen through the top of your head
- Engage your T.line
- Stand tall !

Good
sources of potassium are found in foods such as bananas, spinach, watercress,
papaya, parsnip, radish, passionfruit, red wine & red capsicum. Potassium is
found in many fruits and vegetables, which are easily absorbed by the body.
Potassium
is crucial for the smooth functioning of all muscles and nerves in the body. It
also helps to ensure that the fluid levels in the body are balanced. One of its
other important roles is t help prevent calcium being lost in the urine.
Be aware that too much sodium from processed foods, salty foods & excess
alcohol, can affect levels of potassium. Often muscle cramps can be caused by a
low intake of Potassium.
